Before you do anything, find the care label sewn into your Jellycat. Every Jellycat character has one, and the instructions vary by design.
Some are machine washable. Some are hand wash only. Some need surface cleaning only. Reading the label first is the only step that matters before you start. According to Jellycat's official care guidelines, care instructions are also listed on each individual product page on their website.
How to Wash a Jellycat Correctly
Machine Washable Characters
Place the Jellycat inside a pillowcase or mesh laundry bag first. This protects the fur and any delicate features during the cycle. Use a gentle cycle with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. No bleach. No fabric softener. Both damage the fabric and affect the color over time.
Take it out as soon as the cycle finishes and reshape it by hand before it starts to dry.
Hand Wash Only Characters
Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Work the soap gently through the fur with your hands. Pay extra attention to any stained areas. Rinse thoroughly until no soap residue remains, then squeeze out the excess water without wringing or twisting the Jellycat.
Surface Clean Only Characters
Dampen a soft cloth with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. Dab the affected area gently without rubbing. Press a dry cloth into the cleaned spot to remove moisture and let the Jellycat air dry completely. Drying, Brushing, and Day-to-Day Maintenance
Never tumble dry, iron, or dry clean any Jellycat. After washing, reshape the Jellycat by hand and let it air dry. A hairdryer in a cool setting makes a real difference here. Letting the Jellycat air dry completely on its own without any heat often leaves the fur flat and stiff. A few minutes with a cool hairdryer while the fur is still slightly damp keeps the texture closer to how it started.
Keep the Jellycat out of direct sunlight for long stretches. Extended exposure causes fading, especially on brighter characters.
How Often Should You Wash Your Jellycat
Wash only when your Jellycat needs it. Overwashing shortens the life of the fabric faster than regular handling does.
For light dust or general freshening, a gentle shake and some fresh air handles the job without putting the Jellycat through a full wash cycle. Spot clean small marks as soon as they happen.
