Most Whistler souvenirs are bought in the last forty minutes of a trip, somewhere between checkout and the highway, in a state of mild panic.

That is how people end up home with a keychain, a shot glass, and a t-shirt they will wear exactly once, to paint a fence.

The things worth bringing back from Whistler are the ones that do not have "Whistler" printed across the front in a novelty font.

THE MOUNTAIN, WITHOUT THE FRIDGE MAGNET

There is a version of Whistler shopping that involves buying an image of the place. It is not a bad instinct. It is just usually executed badly.

The Whistler Blackcomb print by James Niehues is the exception people actually frame. Niehues hand-painted the trail maps that a generation of skiers navigated by, and the 18x24 is the piece that ends up above a desk in Toronto rather than in a drawer.

The Whistler Mountain Villager Puzzle does something similar. It is a 500-piece illustration of the mountain, and it has the advantage of being a January activity as well as a wall object.

For anyone who has actually ridden here, Lifts and Trails Whistler Edition is what separates a souvenir from a memento, and a game built on trails you have personally crashed on is about as specific as it gets.

THINGS THAT SMELL LIKE WHISTLER

Scent is the most underrated souvenir category and the easiest to get right.

The Laykhaus candles are the ones we sell most of to visitors, and it is not close. Black spruce, pine needle, cedar. Lighting one in an apartment in March is a more effective memory device than any photograph on your phone.

A candle is the rare gift that gets used up entirely, which is exactly why people are happy to receive one.

They also survive a suitcase, which is more than can be said for most things bought on holiday.

NOT SURE WHO YOU ARE EVEN SHOPPING FOR

Some trips end with a clear list. Most end with a vague sense that you owe four people something and no idea what.

We built a gift quiz for exactly that. Answer a few quick questions and it narrows thousands of products down to a short list you can actually act on.

It takes about a minute, and it is considerably faster than walking the length of the village hoping something jumps out.

WHY CREEKSIDE AND NOT THE VILLAGE

Most Whistler shopping happens in the main village, between the gondola and the lifts, in the window where everyone else is also shopping.

Creekside is quieter. That is the whole pitch. You can look at things properly, ask someone what they actually think, and leave with something chosen rather than grabbed.

We are at 2063 Lake Placid Road, and if you are driving in from Vancouver you pass us before you reach the village anyway.

WHAT WE WOULD ACTUALLY TAKE HOME

If you have twenty minutes and a list, here is the short version of what to buy in Whistler:

  • Something of the mountain that is not a photograph, like the Niehues print or the Villager puzzle
  • Something that smells like it, which almost always means a candle
  • Something for the person who fed your cat, ideally barware or a book
  • Something for a kid, which is the one category where you cannot overthink it
  • Something small for yourself, because you will regret it otherwise

Still not sure? Browse these collections, no wrong choices here:

None of it needs the word Whistler printed on it. The good souvenirs never do.
